Dr. Matthew Confer

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Matthew is interested in vibrational spectroscopic imaging and the development of machine learning and deep learning models for biological and materials applications.

Matthew completed his doctoral degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Alabama in 2020 with Profs. David Dixon, Shane Street, and Tonya Klein. His doctoral work focused on experimental and computational studies of material decomposition.

After graduating, he continued to work at the University of Alabama as a postdoctoral researcher for Profs. David Dixon and Ayanjeet Ghosh performing computational and experimental studies of lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide battery materials and discrete frequency infrared imaging of Alzheimer’s diseases in human brain tissue, respectively.

Matthew joined Prof. Bhargava’s lab in July 2021 and will work on the development of machine learning and deep learning models for histopathological classification of colorectal cancer tissue based upon infrared spectroscopic images.
